Summary
Campeche has its own international airport (CPE) with daily direct flights from Mexico City (Aeromar and Volaris). By land, it's 3 hours by car from Mérida, 5 hours from Cancún, 6 hours from Palenque. ADO buses connect Campeche daily with every major city in the Yucatán Peninsula and southeastern Mexico. Once inside the walled city, everything is walkable — no car needed.
By air
Campeche International Airport (CPE)
Campeche has its own international airport, code CPE (Aeropuerto Internacional Alberto Acuña Ongay). It's 10 minutes by car from the historic center — taxi runs about $250–350 MXN ($15–20 USD), depending on time of day.
Daily direct flights:
- Mexico City (MEX) ↔ Campeche (CPE) — direct flight of 1h 50min, operated by Aeromar and Volaris. Multiple departures daily. Typical fare: $80–180 USD round-trip.
- Monterrey (MTY) ↔ CPE — operated by Viva Aerobus seasonally, direct flight of 2h 15min.
For international flights (United States, Europe), the most practical option is to fly to Mérida (MID) and rent a car or take an ADO bus to Campeche — far more flight options and airlines.
Mérida Airport (MID) as alternative
Mérida has an international airport with direct flights from Houston, Dallas, Miami, Toronto, Madrid (seasonal), and many Mexican cities. From MID to Campeche: 2.5–3 hours in a rental car or premium ADO bus from Mérida's central terminal.
Quick air summary
- From within Mexico: direct flight CDMX → CPE.
- From the US: flight to MID (Mérida) + car or ADO to Campeche.
- From Europe: flight to Mexico City or Cancún + domestic connection.
- Not recommended: flying into Cancún if your final destination is Campeche — it's 5 hours of land travel afterward.
By road
From Mérida
3 hours, 175 km (109 miles). Take the 180-D (toll) or 180 (free) highways. The 180-D is faster and safer, with a toll of about $200 MXN ($12 USD). The free 180 passes through villages like Hecelchakán and Tenabo — slower but more interesting. Both end at the Campeche Periférico ring road; the historic center is on the seaward (western) side.
From Cancún
5–5.5 hours, 460 km (286 miles). Most common route: 180 via Mérida (with optional stops at Valladolid or Izamal). If your plan includes Chichén Itzá along the way, Valladolid is a logical base. To go straight through, the Cancún-Campeche ADO premium bus is very comfortable (see below).
From Palenque or Villahermosa
Palenque to Campeche: 6 hours, 360 km, via Escárcega. The road has some rough sections during the wet season — check current conditions. Villahermosa to Campeche: 4 hours, 290 km, in better shape.
From San Cristóbal de las Casas (Chiapas)
9–10 hours via Palenque. A full day of driving. Alternative: ADO night bus (departs around 8 PM, arrives 6 AM).
By ADO bus
ADO (Autobuses de Oriente) is the dominant bus line of southeastern Mexico. Excellent quality, reclining seats, air conditioning, restroom, WiFi. Three relevant tiers:
- ADO standard — 130° reclining seats, 4 across. Solid choice.
- ADO GL — wider seats, complimentary coffee. Recommended for 4+ hour trips.
- ADO Platino — only 24 seats, 145° recline, pillow and blanket. Ideal for overnight.
Buy online at ado.com.mx or via the app. Reserve 3–7 days ahead in high season.
Approximate times and fares from Campeche:
- Mérida: 2.5 hours, $250–350 MXN ($15–20 USD)
- Cancún: 6 hours, $700–1,200 MXN ($40–70 USD)
- Playa del Carmen: 6.5 hours, $750–1,300 MXN
- Villahermosa: 4 hours, $350–550 MXN
- Mexico City (TAPO): 16–18 hours overnight, $1,400–2,200 MXN ($80–125 USD)
The Campeche Bus Terminal sits on Av. Patricio Trueba (outside the walled city, 5 minutes by taxi from the historic center). Taxi to the center: $50–80 MXN.
By rental car
Driving on the Yucatán Peninsula is straightforward — well-maintained highways, signed secondary roads, low traffic. Pemex stations are widely available.
If you fly into Mérida and rent there, consider:
- Local agencies in Mérida (Carriba, Maya Holiday, México Rent A Car) tend to be cheaper than international chains.
- Comprehensive coverage is essential — Mexican basic insurance covers very little; adding full coverage at the agency is much cheaper than relying on credit-card coverage.
- Parking in Campeche: inside the walled city there are metered streets and private parking lots ($30–50 MXN/hour). Most Casonas MX properties don't include private garage — coordinate with your host.
Getting around once you're in Campeche
The walled historic center measures roughly 1 km × 1 km (0.6 × 0.6 miles). Everything important — Cathedral, bastions, restaurants, museums, Casonas MX properties — is 10–15 minutes on foot. You don't need a car inside the center.
For excursions (Edzná, Champotón beaches, Calakmul) or trips outside the wall:
- Taxis — abundant, no meters, agree on price before getting in. Within the center: $50–80 MXN. To the airport: $250–350 MXN.
- Uber — operates but with less availability than traditional taxis. More useful for long airport runs or late-night returns.
- Local car rental — for excursions to Edzná or beaches, renting day-by-day from Campeche makes more sense than holding a rental car the whole stay.
- Private tour — Casonas MX coordinates trips to Edzná, Calakmul, or beaches with driver and optional guide.
An honest recommendation
If you're coming for a short trip focused on Campeche, fly direct to CPE from Mexico City and skip the rental car — take taxis for excursions and walk the rest. It's the simplest setup.
If you're on a longer Yucatán Peninsula trip (Mérida + Campeche + Riviera Maya), rent a car in Mérida or Cancún and keep it the whole trip. Drop it where you picked it up.
If you're traveling exclusively by bus, ADO Platino overnight from Mexico City is perfectly fine. ADO from Mérida is also excellent and lets you see the landscape.
