Best Time to Visit Campeche

Weather, festivals, rain, hurricanes, and rates — an honest month-by-month guide to picking the right dates for what you're looking for.

Read · 7 min By Casonas MX Updated April 2026

Summary

The best time to visit Campeche is November through April: daytime temperatures of 26–30 °C (78–86 °F), low humidity, no significant rain. December and January are the peak months — ideal weather, plus the Festival del Centro Histórico. May to October is the hot/wet season: 32–35 °C (90–95 °F), afternoon thunderstorms, and June through November is officially Atlantic hurricane season (low risk in Campeche, but real). The trade-off: rates drop 20–30% and the city feels less touristed.

Campeche's two seasons

Like all of the Yucatán Peninsula, Campeche has essentially two seasons — a dry one and a wet one. The difference is sharp, and worth understanding before you plan.

Dry season · November to April

Clear skies, fresh northerly breezes, low relative humidity (40–55%). Temperatures hover around 26–30 °C (78–86 °F) by day and drop to 18–22 °C (65–72 °F) at night. This is the season when Campeche's weather feels perfect for walking, visiting bastions, and dining outdoors. It coincides with North American winter holidays, so it's also peak demand and peak rates.

Wet season · May to October

Sustained heat (32–35 °C / 90–95 °F by day), high humidity (70–85%), near-daily afternoon storms between July and September. The good news: the rains are intense but brief — usually between 4 and 7 PM, leaving mornings and evenings usable. The city feels less crowded, rates drop, and the sunsets with distant storms over the Gulf are visually stunning.

"Summer rains are intense but brief: usually between 4 and 7 PM, leaving mornings and evenings usable."

Month by month

January — the best month

Cool days (24–28 °C / 75–82 °F), almost cold nights (18 °C / 65 °F), no aggressive humidity. Probably the best month of the year for Campeche. High rates; book 2–3 months ahead.

February — Carnaval

Ideal weather continues. Carnaval de Campeche (variable dates, usually the last week of February or first week of March) — one of the oldest carnivals in Latin America, with parades, troupes, and dancing in the Zócalo. If this is why you're coming, book 4 months ahead.

March — Easter Week, watch out

Excellent weather but be aware: Semana Santa (variable dates) fills the city with Mexican domestic tourism. For travelers seeking quiet, the weeks before and after are better.

April — heat begins

Last weeks of the comfortable season. Toward the end of the month, temperatures start to climb. Rates ease slightly compared to January–March.

May — heat without rain yet

Real heat begins (32 °C+ / 90 °F+) but rains are still scarce. One of the best value months if you tolerate the heat. Afternoons are ideal for the pool.

June through September — wet season core

The thick of the wet season. Heavy heat, high humidity, frequent afternoon storms. June through November is the official Atlantic hurricane season, but Campeche is relatively sheltered by the Banco de Campeche. The risk is low but real — travel insurance is wise. Lowest rates of the year.

October — transition

Still warm and humid, but rains start to ease toward the end of the month. End of low season. Hanal Pixán (the Maya version of Day of the Dead) — late October and the first week of November, much more authentic and intimate than at other Mexican tourist destinations.

November — good season begins

Northerly cold fronts start arriving, bringing temperature and humidity down. The first half of the month can be variable; the second half already feels like tropical winter. Rates in transition.

December — Festival del Centro Histórico

Excellent weather. Festival del Centro Histórico de Campeche (first half of December) — outdoor concerts, exhibitions, gastronomy. Worth coordinating a visit around this festival.

Festivals worth planning around

If what you're after is…

Best weather, no compromises

December, January, or February. Book ahead.

Best value

May or the first two weeks of November. Manageable heat in May, gentle transition in November, rates significantly lower than peak.

Nobody around

September. It's hot and rainy, but the city feels real, rates are at their lowest, and restaurants treat you with care because there's no rush.

Living local culture

October–November (Hanal Pixán) or February (Carnaval).
